As an author, singer, actor and self-advocate, Marcus Sikora has already accomplished more in his life than most other 27-year-olds. Now he’s gathering yet another accomplishment as the 2017 Be Beautiful Be Yourself Ambassador.

When it comes to describing the Nebraska native, many people tend to use the word creative. The description aligns perfectly with Marcus’ ambitions, in 2015 he released his first animated short and children’s book Black Day: The Monster Rock Band to wildly positive reviews.

“I’ve always liked to make stories,” Marcus said. “One day, I had an idea for a Halloween band, and then I imagined a boy who wants to be in the band. The idea started out as Black Day: The Musical, and then my mom and I made it into a book. It’s a children’s book, but grown-ups like it, too.”

But, his artistic abilities don’t stop there. He takes voice lessons and performs on stage with local and national theater companies with hopes of winning a Tony Award one day.

In his free-time — which is limited — Marcus loves to eat PB&J sandwiches and hang out with his cats named Uncle Red and May.

Each year, in addition to choosing upwards of 20 self-advocates to model in our fashion show, Global selects an ambassador who graces the front cover of our award-winning invitation. Ambassadors and their families are dedicated to garnering support for Global’s work towards significantly improving the lives of people with Down syndrome. A viewpoint that is nothing new to Marcus.

“I like to help the kids,” Sikora said, and he wants to make sure they agree with his philosophy on life: “Down syndrome is fine.”

And, Marcus doesn’t plan on slowing down anytime soon. In fact he’ll be speaking on World Down Syndrome Day event at the United Nations on March 21, with a time TBD.
