The GLOBAL Research & Medical Care Roundtable at the NDSC 50th Annual Convention in New Orleans.

At the NDSC Annual Convention in Dallas, Global hosted its Roundtable with record attendance, received two awards, presented 10 workshops on research and medical care, provided grants to nine local Down syndrome organizations, and our self-advocates received standing ovations!

The Global Down Syndrome Foundation is proud to offer the Global Down Syndrome Foundation Research & Medical Care Roundtable: What parents, self-advocates & caregivers should know on Thursday, July 21, 2016, from 1pm to 5pm at the JW Marriott Grande Lakes, Orlando, Florida. Co-organized with the NDSC, the Global Roundtable is a free benefit and features renowned scientists and medical professionals. Topics include Down syndrome and Cancer, Autoimmune Disease, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Global’s 2015 Research and Medical Care Roundtable attracted world-renowned Down syndrome and Alzheimer's disease experts to the NDSC Annual Convention in Phoenix, Arizona, on June 25. The half-day of cutting-edge research and best-practices medical care topics included Current Research Projects, Promising Trials, Symptoms and Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease in DS, Diagnosis of Dementia, and Behavioral signs in people with Down Syndrome and Dementia.

Global's Educational Series was launched in 2006 and brings national and internationally renowned Down syndrome experts to Colorado for two full days of lectures.

The inaugural national Research & Medical Care Roundtable was held July 18, 2013, attracting top scientists and researchers focused on Down syndrome. The experts presented their work and answered questions for over 400 attendees, approximately 80 percent being self-advocates and family members, and 20 percent professionals.

The Global Down Syndrome Educational Series on November 2-3, 2012, featured Dr. Fran Hickey and the Multi-Disciplinary Team from the Anna and John J. Sie Center for Down Syndrome at Children’s Hospital Colorado. The two-day series of keynotes, workshops and education fair for professionals and parents was held at the Denver Tech Center Marriott. The Global Down Syndrome Foundation educational symposium on Saturday, May 4, 2012 featured Dr. Libbby Kumin. She is a world-renowned speech and language expert who has dedicated her career since 1969 to helping people with Down syndrome. She is a professor of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at Loyola University, Maryland, where she founded the Loyola University Speech and Language Down Syndrome Center for Excellence in 1980. Brian Chicoine, co-founder and Medical Director at the Adult Down Syndrome Center of Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Ill. and Dennis McGuire, co-founder and Director of Psychological Services, teamed up to present at the November 2011 Global Down Syndrome Educational Series. The presentations provided a wealth of medical and psychological knowledge about adults with Down syndrome to professionals and families.

Jennifer Meyers Bekins is a speech-language pathologist with the Jane and Richard Thomas Center for Down Syndrome at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Jennifer presented to many parents and speech language pathologists at the Global Down Syndrome Educational Series in November 2008. Learn more about our educational series.

Professor Sue Buckley is the Founder and Director of Science and Research, and the Chief Scientist at Down Syndrome Education International. In March 2007, Sue presented to a record-breaking 400+ professionals, mostly teachers, and 300+ parents at the Global Down Syndrome Educational Series.

Patricia C. Winders was the guest lecturer at the second Global Down Syndrome Educational Series. For the first two hours she provided hands-on examples by having children with Down syndrome of different ages come up on stage. She had spent an entire day with those same children the day before. From crawling, to walking, to riding a bike, Patricia showed the audience how it is done. Patricia made such an impact, and was so inspired to do more for people with Down syndrome in Colorado, that she joined the Anna and John J. Sie Center for Down Syndrome as its first professional in December 2007.
