Alzheimer’s Disease in Down Syndrome Understanding the Connection

Michael Rafii, MD, PhD, is the Medical Director of the Alzheimer’s Therapeutic Research Institute (ATRI) and Associate Professor of Neurology at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.

Dr. Rafii’s research focuses on the design and conduct of clinical trials for Alzheimer’s disease including a genetic form of Alzheimer’s disease that occurs in people with Down syndrome. He is Principal Investigator of the phase Ib placebo-controlled trial of the anti-amyloid vaccine ACI-24 in Down syndrome as well as the planned phase II trial. Dr. Rafii leads the NIH-funded Alzheimer’s Clinical Trial Consortium – Down Syndrome (ACTC-DS), an international research network that serves as a platform for conducting clinical trials to prevent Alzheimer’s disease dementia in people with Down syndrome. He is Chair of the Alzheimer’s Association Professional Interest Area for Down syndrome and a member of the Adult Clinical Committee of the Trisomy 21 Research Society.
